Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 1,445 in Q2 2024, versus 3,579 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 34% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Haier Group filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the consumer industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 145 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 363 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Gree Electric Appliances Inc of Zhuhai with 109 environmental sustainability patent filings, Midea Group (90 filings), and LG (90 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 33% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 33%, followed by the US (15%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 32% lower than the 65% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
